things i like about totk so far: the depths,
i am going to be so completely honest i thought id be able to think of more. um. this is awkward
#ive only beat the first ‘temple’ the rito one and like. i thought it was goofy. i did not take it seriously. the boss was cool the music#was banger as usual that specifically i thought was cool#i doo like the depths tho. fun to explore. pretty. ominous music. quiet. peaceful if i aboid mobs correctly#and like all the stuff that is inherent to botw/totk i enjoy the world the horses cooking the outfits etc etc#but thats not unique to totk so i dont count it#goofy ass cutscenes. weird pacing. story feels very forced and not coherent so far#really just feels like they went ok we need to make another botw and just made up whatever excuse they could#to get zelda out of the story again instead of actually writing something#putting the wagon in front of the horse situation#also botws whols thing was New Innovative Breaking Conventions#and then they went oh the New Innovative Breaking Conventions game did good? cool lets make the exact same New thing again#not how that works. sucks all of the appeal out of the whole foundation#you cant copy innovation you have to make something new#like im gomna play it anyways and enjoy myself cuz its zelda but come on man. and for 70 bucks??#killing nintendo myself#oh i like the tower cutscene link fucking blastinf out of the top of it#also pretty#im a bit disappointed in the sky islands it doesnt really feel explorable its just like hey theyre there. some of them have little things on#them or some hidden challenge. and i go ok. well what about all the empty ones that are a pain in the ass to get to#and they go shhh shshshshsh. dont worry about that. think about Parallels. symbolism.#when all i can think about it the fact i do not have my large bird friend to help me explore#being so serious loftwings would make this game better. new mode of traversal for the new environment (sky)#those robo birds suck theyre so hard to get off the islands without just falling#ive tried fucking around with the new building/tech stuff i do not like it. awkward. clunky. irritating to me#idk if thats a me issue or if other people also think its bad but. im not a fan#give me my fucking bird. it makes sense and it would work so much better. please

So. Johanna Quartet (which I spelled wrong in my post. Sorry, Johanna.) and why it slaps.
The first thing that deserves a mention is that it’s just absolutely beautiful. I don’t know anything about music theory, so I won’t try to break that element down, but if you haven’t, I’d really recommend giving it a listen. The 2023 revival cast version is excellent imo.
The part I mainly want to talk about is Sweeney’s verses, cause I think they’re really interesting. It’s (arguably) the most introspective we ever see him in the show, and it is (arguably) both the point in the tragedy when it becomes clear that it’s too late for things to turn out well, and the false high where it seems like things might work out.
Like, the beginning of the song makes it pretty clear that at this point, he has become the person he most hates. With his possessiveness over Johanna (“my little lamb, my pet” and all that) and the incestuous overtones in lines like, “And are you beautiful and pale, with yellow hair, like her? I’d want you beautiful and pale, the way I dreamed you were, Johanna” it’s laid bare for the audience that there is no difference, really, between him and Judge Turpin anymore. They both just want to own this woman, because she’s beautiful and reminds them of her mother.
But then the last couple verses come in, and we’re given a tantalizing glimpse at the possibility of character growth with lines like, “And though I’ll think of you I guess until the day I die, I think I miss you less and less as every day goes by, Johanna.” From the second he walked onstage, he’s been single-minded in his focus on his grief and revenge, but in this incongruously honest moment, he’s admitting that he could move on.
And then! And then!!! For (to my memory) the first and only time in the show, he actually acknowledges that his fantasy of getting Johanna back is flawed. Like, earlier he doubted that it would happen (“And I’ll never see Johanna, no I’ll never hug my girl to me,” “I think we shall not meet again, my little dove, my sweet Johanna,” etc) but this is the first time he acknowledges that if it did, it wouldn’t make him happy. “And you’d be beautiful and pale, and look too much like her.” Getting Johanna back would just remind him of everything else he’s lost. There is no going back.
And his last line in the song encapsulates this contradiction – “Wake up, Johanna, another bright red day. We learn, Johanna, to say goodbye.” On the surface it seems like more character growth – he’s going to learn to let go of the past! – but the fact that he can’t help but address this statement to Johanna is a sign that he’s still too deep in his obsession. You get the sense, even at this point where he’s the closest he’s ever gotten acknowledging his fatal flaw, that it’s far too late.
Also probably worth mentioning that the entire time he’s going through all this introspection, he’s just. Slitting people’s throats. Just the whole time.

I love uni because you can just sit there being extremely focused in class and suddenly someone walks in casually and just sits there silently half an hour after the beginning of the class and like. The professor just ignores them. Literally no one cares.
And look I know it's a typical college thing but after highschool it's just very different. Like in highschool teachers kick your ass and send you to the office. Here they just royally ignore you. I love it.

Tolkien’s specific sense of misogyny is so funny to me cuz like he clearly knows that women are often very, very cool and writes all these cool women characters. like galadriel and melian and eowyn. but like his writing is always so damn selective about when he remembers these women are cool (or like that they exist at all). And coincidentally these women always seem to stop being relevant or important or any sort of non-passive the moment theres a quirky little dude to pair them up with.
with the exception being, obviously, luthien, who gets a million times cooler the second she has a cute little damsel in distress to run after. (and also that eowyns whole shtick actually works and aligns with the themes of the novel)

rubber ducking my way through these revisions... i'm at the point where the thing is complete but not polished and the polishing phase never stops driving me nuts
#(sits my thistle charm down for a talk) pasensya na kuya i have to put you in a situation#falin thistle gothic fic is pretty much a done deal na but. the revisions... cries#there's a subplot i'm not sure i should add re: the winged lion but i feel that would be tangential#every thistle fic i write is like 'what the Fuck do i do with the demon'#in gothic au there's a scene where it speaks to falin from behind bed curtains but for the most part#thistle is the 'antagonist' in that one. shame bc the setting is ripe for demon nonsense it's just not the point ://#at best there could be a scene where falin gets a hold of the book but relinquishes it to her fucked up little friend#also got a yaad thistle au draft inspired by children's books where i'm not sure how strongly to push the abuser metaphor#before it creates tonal dissonance and detracts from the story... it feels important to include#and i don't want to shy away from that but it's a balancing act for sure. don't think the demon is actually going to show up in person tho#the only draft where the demon is the central focus is the laios thistle mythic fantasy one but that's on the backburner#didn't mean for this word vomit to be Demon Feature but alright#falin&thistle gothic horror: a little chatty. appears in maybe 2-3 scenes to be a manipulative creep#yaad&thistle quiet fantasy: ominous background presence. personification of the world. appears in visions/symbols but never speaks#laios&thistle mythic fantasy: the only reason i haven't written this yet is because the fucker is going to be talking So Goddamn Much in it#roomba writes
